The fashion industry is such a cut throat industry. Personally I don't really know how I fell into it. Throughout my experiences in this industry I consider myself a "silent player" as, I like to call myself. I'm not a type of person to self promote myself to the extreme till I can't handle it anymore. I like to have my work speak for itself. I try my hardest to be honest in the industry as, much as I can. At the same time its so easy to be corrupted. At what point is going to far? Lately the big issue has been people stealing other's work, template of a website, plagiarism, clients, contacts, etc. Then again isn't it a free country? and, that everyone is looking out for themselves at the end of the day? so, naturally no matter what industry you are in you're going to do whatever it takes to get to the top, to be recognized, to be heard and to be talked about. But, at what point do you separate the difference between the business and just respect for other artist? We all are nice to each other to each others faces. We'll hug, kiss on the cheek and nod our heads in agreement till we're both satisfied. We all know within a few minutes we're both going to turn our backs and talk about each other wither its good or bad. Its hard enough to be an artist full time. Its even harder to separate genuine, sincere artist to be friends with to the ones that are just out there to tear you down.
We are so, concerned with the type of click we are involved with or want to be apart of. Why do we have to treat this industry likes its high school again? You've got the local talent team favorite (popular crowd), the jocks ( commercial) and the geeks ( the newbies). When we are all put into a category no one ends up not having an open mind to work with others besides the ones they are already use to. They start to underestimate people, who would probably be a very big benefit to them in the long term. Everyone thinks in the short term period. Its all about what you can do for me NOW. Its a disappointment to see artist who are so, willing and vulnerable who put their heart on their sleeve and will do whatever it takes to be in a certain click. They will go out of their way to satisfy certain people, when at the end they aren't getting the same respect back. They aren't getting the time or day to even be replied to unless they are needed for something. It's a waste of energy that they don't deserve. If you know deep inside how much you're worth and how confident you are in your own work, there is no reason to try to wiggle your way through into a click you probably don't belong to in the first place. But, take it as a learning tool. It probably wasn't meant to be so, stop trying! but, at the same time reflect on what you're doing every single day vs what the click is doing. Don't try to gain more work or do more then a click is doing just to prove them wrong. Do it for yourself. Prove yourself wrong if you had any doubts in your own mind about your work. The fashion industry requires you to be a hustler. So,hustle yourself to get more published worked, to get more higher status clients and to get yourself more paid work. Its hard to not be involved with what these clicks are doing. With social networks we are always curious and always tend to click on what's going on.
I'm sick and tired of hearing people say "take it as a compliment" when new makeup or hair or wardrobe students just graduated copying everything you do. First of all it isn't a compliment. It's an insult. Its an insult to everything that you've worked for. Everyone works there ass off to get where they are now. To have brand new just starting out artist to all of a sudden copy word for word your work , they obviously aren't confident in themselves. They obviously don't know how to actually hustle to get what they want. But, they have something we don't. They are willing. They will do services for cheap (what you pay is what you get) and will do whatever you want them to do at anytime. So, its easy to add people into a click then dump them when they aren't being efficient enough. Don't email artist to be an assistant when you aren't serious about it. Why say one thing then do another? Why pour your heart out crying about how its so hard to get paid work yet when the opportunity is in front of them, they blow it by not being professional. Grow up! when an artist actually takes you on to a project or a job realize its a privilege to be apart of. Take it with an open mind no matter what situation you are in you never know who you are going to meet.
At the end of the day, people from all parts of the industry and all experiences out there will copy the same template as your website, they will probably copy each of your parapgraphs and paste it on to theres. Unless you have some sort of legal doucments to protect yourself. Let them do whatever they want to do and, you do you! Let the clicks continue being there clicks. At the end of the day we are all the same. We are all human beings. No one is perfect and no one is better then the other. No matter what you do as a profession or what your descions may be at the end of the day. We should all realize that no matther who you are we all play an important role in society in someway either if its for the industry, your own personal life or someone elses. Money and status isn't everything.Whatever your passion or goal in life is,do it with an open mind, respect for others, and confidence in yourself. Focus on your own craft and how you can make yourself a better person, and artist. What goes around will come around.
In the mean time I'm off to a shoot with a NEW team that I've never worked with but, still excited. For a editorial fashion magazine based out of Calgary. I'll keep you posted with my projects.
